Organic and Inorganic Chemistry

Session on :

Polymers and Organic Chemistry

Polymers are substances made up of repeating structural units, derived from a specific compound called monomer, joined together by chemical bonds. Polymers forms one of the basic building blocks of the chemical industry. Resins, both natural and synthetic, are organic compounds comprised of non-crystalline and viscous liquids.
In modern industry (except rubber industry), natural resins have almost been replaced by synthetic resins, owing to the superior physical and chemical properties imparted by them. Synthetic resins constitutes of large class of synthetic products that have some of the similar physical properties of natural resins such as hardening permanently but are entirely different in their chemical properties. The major types of synthetic resins include amino, acetal, acrylic, epoxy, phenolic, polyesters and others. The wide varieties of applications of resins include plastics, paints, coatings, adhesives, inks, composites, and others.
The rising demand for polymers, on account of being a key component in the manufacturing of medical devices & equipment and packaging, has resulted in the growth market in the past few years. The demand for such polymers is likely to be driven by the rise in the demand for in-house and advanced devices. The global medical polymers market size was estimated at USD 12.34 billion in 2016, growing at a CAGR of 8.4% over the forecast period. The market is expected to register growth due to high adoption of polymers for implants due to chemical inertness and superior fatigue resistance.
